Space Planning for Interior Design
Learn how designers organize rooms around people, movement, function and visual hierarchy before selecting finishes.
What is space planning?
Space planning is the process of deciding how a room or interior will be organized. It connects the dimensions of the space with activities, furniture, circulation and relationships between zones.
A simple planning sequence
1. Read the brief
Identify who uses the space, what they need to do and what constraints cannot change.
2. Identify zones
Separate functions while preserving useful visual and physical connections.
3. Plan circulation
Protect comfortable movement and avoid furniture that creates unnecessary bottlenecks.
4. Test furniture
Use realistic dimensions and clearances before committing to the visual concept.
