Color Theory for Interior Design
Learn how to build interior colour palettes that work with materials, daylight, artificial light and the proportions of a real room.
Color is part of spatial composition
Interior colour decisions should not be treated as a final decorative layer. Colour changes how we perceive depth, scale, warmth, focus and atmosphere. The best palettes respond to the architecture and the materials already present.
Four practical checks
Undertones
Warm and cool undertones can shift beside timber, stone, tile and upholstery.
Contrast
Decide where the eye should go first and use contrast to support that hierarchy.
Proportion
Use dominant, secondary and accent colours rather than treating every surface equally.
Light
Test colour under the actual daylight and artificial lighting conditions of the space.
